Parkinson's disease group recognised for support work

A support group for Parkinson's disease has been nominated for a national award in recognition of its work.

Halton Parkinson's Support Group in Runcorn aims to improve the quality of life for people living with the condition, by giving them practical advice on coping with symptoms and everyday life, the Runcorn and Widnes Weekly News reports.

The group also invites along family members of Parkinson's patients and carers, in order to allow people to socialise and share any worries they have.

Now the Halton support service has been nominated for Tam of the Year in the Trinity Mirror/Scottish Power Your Champions awards.

"If we can just get people to overcome the fear of that first meeting, they'll see that the best thing about the group is it gives people the confidence to go back out into the community," group secretary Myra Brolly told the publication.

Scientists at the University of Sheffield recently revealed that Parkinson's disease is caused by damage to the part of the brain responsible for forming habits.
