Alzheimer's Association report "Generation Alzheimer's" has said that the condition is the defining disease of the generation of baby boomers.
According to the US report, as the generation ages, one in eight of them will develop the condition.
It is estimated that ten million baby boomers in the US will die with or from Alzheimer's and as of yet there is no way to prevent, cure or halt its progression.
Beth Kallmyer, senior director of constituent relations for the Alzheimer's Association said that this would not only take its toll on those with the condition, but their friends and family.
"[The] long duration often places increasingly intensive care demands on 11 million family members and friends who provide unpaid care, and it negatively affects their health, employment, income and financial security," she said.
This comes after two new studies published in The Journal of the American Medical Association identified the protein fragment beta-amyloid as a helpful biomarker in detecting the risk of Alzheimer's disease.
