NICE to review guideline for multiple sclerosis

The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) has announced that it will review the clinical guidance for multiple sclerosis, the third audit of its kind that it has undertaken with the Royal College of Physicians (RCP).

NICE's most recent management guideline was published in November 2003, and the organisations are calling on people with multiple sclerosis (MS) to take part in the review.

Pam Macfarlane, chief executive of the MS Trust, welcomed the news but said the most important action, implementation of the 2003 guideline, is "patchy".

"There is much scope for improvement in what are essentially six basic key recommendations: specialised MS services, rapid diagnosis, seamless and responsive services, thorough problem assessment and self referral after discharge," she went on to say.

The news comes ahead of World MS Day on May 25th, and the MS Trust is asking employers and employees to take part in a survey of how to condition affects them.
