The NHS Blood and Transplant department (NHSBT) will undergo renovations following a recent review.
A new report has claimed that the NHSBT must continue to improve their ability to ensure that blood supplies are used appropriately, efficiently and safely.
Public health minister Anne Milton stated: "[NHSBT has] to be commended for the efficiencies it has already achieved.
"However, the review shows that further improvements can be made - improvement that health professionals want and patients need."
A series of NHSBT pilots will be launched in early 2012 in light of the review and will work to improve stock management and joint transfusion laboratory partnerships.
NHSBT has already been recognised by the Health Service Journal Awards.
The department has been shortlisted for three prestigious awards for its work to encourage and promote blood and organ donation.
NHSBT's Make a Date to Donate campaign has also been shortlisted for two regional awards in the CIPR North West and Yorkshire and Lincolnshire regions.
