More help needed to deal with mental health issues, charity claims
More support is needed to help young people deal with mental health issues, a charity has claimed.
Sixty per cent of people have found it difficult to cope mentally at a least one time in their life, with 55 per cent of those people saying they have experienced depression, according to a survey by the mental health charity Together.
Thirty two per cent even admitted to feeling like they were "cracking up" on at least one occasion.
A study recently published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine is the latest in a number of pieces of research that have linked depression to the onset of dementia later in life.
"We hope the results go some way to try and reduce the 'them and us' mentality about the topic that can lead to stigma, and perhaps prevents some people from seeking help," said the chief executive officer of Together, Liz Felton.
Reacting to the results, care services minister Phil Hope said that whereas conditions such as cancer or heart disease elicit sympathy and understanding, mental health issues were "all too often treated as taboo".
