More government support needed for living aids, expert says

Many older individuals use assisted living or home care in order to remain in their own homes for longer.

Lili Hoag, senior policy and communications officer at Counsel and Care has said that the government should invest more in aids and adaptations to help older people stay out of care homes for longer.

She explained that there are plenty of companies manufacturing such products, but claimed the government must offer more funding and support to make them available to a wider range of people.

Ms Hoag explained that Counsel and Care provide the All Party Parliamentary Group for housing and care for older people with a report on living well at home.

"We talk a lot about the idea of what it might actually mean to do things like housing exchanges, or downsizing or adapting but obviously doing everything with the home you have - [and] obviously recognising that having a four bedroom multi-floored home might not be the best option for an older person who is living alone," she said.
