More dementia research needed, says trust

More research should be done into understanding the cause of dementia, the Alzheimer's Research Trust has said.

Rebecca Wood, chief executive of the trust said that there has been stigma about dementia in the past but this is now beginning to change for the better.

This comes after the government called for researchers in the field of dementia to claim a bigger portion of the state's research budget in order to help those with the condition.

Ms Wood said that the trust is delighted in this move by the government and that more dementia research is a good thing,

"However, we still need to see what mechanisms will be put in place to ensure dementia research is prioritised before we can know what effect this will have," she continued.

NHS figures show that almost 249,463 individuals in England have been diagnosed with dementia but it is thought that some 575,000 people actually have the condition.
