Missing Alzheimer's patient located 175 miles from hospital

An investigation has been launched after a 90-year-old Alzheimer's patient disappeared from a hospital in Bolton and turned up more than 175 miles away in Bristol.

Staff at the Royal Bolton Hospital reported Jonathan Hastilow-Sands missing just after 10:00 GMT on Saturday morning (March 2nd), the Bolton News reports.

Greater Manchester Police widened its search for the missing gentleman as the day progressed, calling in support from the Bolton Mountain Rescue Team and launching a public appeal for information.

However, officers were contacted by their colleagues from the Avon and Somerset Constabulary at around 21:00 GMT and informed that Mr Hastilow-Sands had been admitted to Bristol Royal Infirmary.

A spokesman for the force said: "He'd fallen at Dorchester Street bus station and was taken to Bristol Royal Infirmary, which is where it was discovered that he was a missing person."

It is not yet known how Mr Hastilow-Sands - who had been a patient at the Royal Bolton Hospital for "several days" - had come to be in Bristol.

The hospital confirmed it will be investigating the incident.
