Mental illness 'needs more attention'

Mental illness does not receive enough attention considering the number of people in the UK with conditions such as depression and schizophrenia, according to a charity.

Marjorie Wallace, chief executive of mental health charity SANE said that in the UK, only five per cent of medical research is conducted on these conditions despite the fact it makes up 15 per cent of all disability.

"We have long campaigned for mental illness to be treated with the same priority as cancer or heart disease, knowing that as many as one in four of us will experience it at some point in our lives, and that this suffering will impinge on families and friends as well," she
continued.

This comes after the Department of Health announced that mental health will be given equal priority with physical illness.

The no health without mental health strategy will emphasise the importance of early intervention and prevention in tackling the issue.
