Labour to review older people policy

Labour to review older people policy

Labour party policy with regard to older people is to be reviewed, shadow health secretary John Healey has said.

Experts are to discuss how older people can contribute to society and how the NHS can cope with the rapidly ageing population.

People on the panel include Age UK charity director Michelle Mitchell and former TV presenter and labour peer Joan Bakewell.

"By both considering these concerns and also understanding how best to make sure older people benefit from new technology and design innovations, Labour's review will seek to identify a fair and fulfilling quality of life for all in old age," said Mr Healey.

One idea could be to introduce a minister for older people, after Jane Ashcroft, chief executive of Anchor, said that this would mean the views of older people would be heard in parliament.

The expert said that ageism is a frequent occurrence in the UK, and language is tolerated in the country that would not be in other nations.
