Incidence of neurological conditions 'to increase'

The incidence of stroke, dementia, Parkinson's disease and epilepsy is to increase as the population ages, medical professionals have predicted.

 Loyola University Health System neurologists Dr Jose Biller and Dr Michael Schneck wrote in journal Frontiers in Neurology that these and other age-related neurological conditions are to increase.

However, there is more hope now than ever before for people with neurological conditions, according to the scientists, with new treatments emerging all the time.

"We respectfully suggest that the future of neurology will be critically dependent on harmonizing the tensions between clinical skills and an over-reliance on testing paradigms," wrote the authors.

This comes after two companies signed an agreement worth a possible £110.3 million to develop a cure for Parkinson's disease.

Merck KGaA teamed up with Domain Therapeutics in France to investigate further the metabotropic glutamate receptor 4 (mGluR4) which is a suspected target for Parkinson's therapy.
