Health 'shown to improve with spa visits'

A report has claimed people could be able to improve their health by staying at a spa for a week.

Research from Thomas Jefferson University Hospital evaluated 15 participants before and after their visit to health and wellness spa in Desert Hot Springs California We Care Spa.

It was found that the programme was safe and helped to improve the participants' health, with the findings published in the December issue of Integrative Medicine, A Clinician's Journal.

Dr Andrew Newberg, director of research at the Jefferson-Myrna Brind Center of Integrative Medicine and lead author on the study, said: "Programmes such as these have never before been formally evaluated for their safety and physiological effects."

A statistically significant improvement in anxiety and depression levels was noted in the report.

Common medication prescribed to treat anxiety was recently shown by a study to potentially have a negative impact on the memory and concentration of older adults.
