Govt reveals new mental health framework

The government has revealed a new implementation framework for mental health to enable organisations to improve the support they offer staff.

Using the framework, it is hoped the government's six high-level objectives from the mental health strategy No Health Without Mental Health will be rolled out.

Organisations will be able to access useful guidance and sources of information on how to use their existing jurisdiction and resources to improve mental wellbeing in the UK.

Currently, it is estimated that mental health issues among staff costs business £1,000 per employee each year, draining the economy of almost £30 billion.

To address the problem, the government is urging employers to be more proactive. Schools, local authorities, housing organisations, voluntary groups, and health and care providers can also use the framework to improve their approach to mental health.

Paul Farmer, chief executive of Mind, commented: "Last year's Mental Health strategy was very welcome and we look forward to using the Implementation Framework and working with a range of organisations to ensure that it is brought to life."
