Family history of alcoholism 'adds to damaging effects of prenatal alcohol exposure'

A new piece of research has claimed that there is a link between a family history of alcoholism and the damaging effects of prenatal alcohol exposure.

The study, which was conducted at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine and San Diego State University, found prenatal exposure to alcohol (PAE) can lead to serious deficiencies, including deficits in spatial working memory.

Research is due to the published in the January 2013 issue of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research and Sarah Mattson, a professor of psychology at San Diego State University and corresponding author for the study, stated children with histories of heavy PAE have been shown to exhibit a broad range of neurocognitive deficits.

The specialist said: "Previous studies demonstrated that children with PAE may exhibit difficulties learning spatial locations and later recognising if an object is in a previously learned location."

Researchers in France recently published a study that claimed alcoholism can not only cause a stroke, but may lead to individuals experiencing them earlier.
