Explain mental health in simple terms, expert claims

People who have experienced mental health issues and are applying for a job should explain their condition to a prospective employer using basic descriptions.

This is the opinion of Nick Norris, chartered psychologist and author of Think Yourself Happy.

"Obviously you have to be honest when you are applying for a job, however my advice would be to try and use your application to explain things in very simple terms," he stated.

Consequently, patients should avoid scary medical terminology and conceptualise their condition in everyday language and situations.

This can be done by saying, for example, that mental health problems occurred in the past because of the death of a loved one, a broken down relationship, or monetary issues, according to Mr Norris.

By explaining mental health issues this way, it makes them tangible for employers and allows workers to explain how they dealt with it and how they can avoid it in the future.
