Exercising hormone 'improves stroke recovery'

A hormone improves the long-term recovery from stroke, according to new research, which could aid patients with the condition using home care.

Found in the blood, the insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) contributes to growth and bone mass, according to the study presented in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.

The hormone was found to be most prevalent in people who exercise regularly and have good health.

Associate Professor David Aberg at the Sahlgrenska Academy explained: "[The] hormone is associated with improved long-term recovery, and thus there is still the prospect of improvement - even after three months after the stroke."

In other news, playing computer games could assist stroke recovery, according to research published in the Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation.

Computer games were found to speed up and improve recovery from stroke, tackling aspects of movement including hand/arm coordination, accuracy and speed, precision of grip and finger motion.
