Exercise 'as good as secondary depression medication'

Exercise 'as good as secondary depression medication'

Exercise could be used as a secondary 'medication' for those with depression, who may use assisted living due to their condition, according to a new study.

Research published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry found that among patients whose condition has not been cured by a single antidepressant medication, exercise was as effective as administering a second antidepressant drug.

Lead author Dr Madhukar Trivedi explained that many people feel better after beginning a course of antidepressants, but they do not feel completely back to normal.

"This study shows that exercise can be as effective as adding another medication. Many people would rather use exercise than add another drug, particularly as exercise has a proven positive effect on a person's overall health and well-being," he continued.

Meanwhile, research published in the Journal of Abnormal Psychology revealed in terms of mental illnesses, women are more likely to be diagnosed with depression and anxiety, while men are prone to substance abuse and antisocial behaviour.
