Eat five a day to reduce cancer risk, expert says

People should ensure they consume five pieces of fruit and vegetables per day to lessen their chance of cancer, one expert has advised, a condition which could leave them in need of home care.

Emma Malcolm, chief executive of Prostate Action, said that recommendations to stave off cancer include eating a healthy diet which encompasses at least five pieces of fruit and vegetables a day and a reduction in salt, fat and sugar.

This follows a Harvard School of Public Health-led study which found that men who were regular drinkers of coffee had a lower risk of developing a lethal form of prostate cancer.

Furthermore, the decrease in risk was seen among those who drank both the regular and decaffeinated forms of the beverage.

Ms Malcolm said that while this research is "encouraging", it does have some limitations.

"All men, regardless of their diagnosis, should try and do some form of moderate physical exercise for at least 30 minutes, five times a week," she said.
