Drug combo 'may treat tough cancers'

A new combination of medications may successfully treat cancers that have been difficult to combat, research shows, potentially aiding those using home care due to the disease.

The Brigham and Women's Hospital study, published in journal Cancer Cell, found that a new combination of targeted therapies could treat two aggressive types of tumours.

Authors noted that many tumours do not respond to many single therapies.

Researchers found that their drug combination treated both a nervous system tumour associated with neurofibromatosis type 1, and KRAS-mutant lung cancer.

Lead author Dr Karen Cichowski said: "By identifying a more effective targeted treatment, the outcome and survival rate for these cancers may see a drastic improvement, and patients may avoid the typical side-effects of chemotherapy."

In other news, saffron could be used to combat liver cancer, according to a new study published in journal Hepatology.
