Dementia nurse 'should be on every health board'

A woman in Scotland is leading an appeal to put a specialist dementia nurse on every health board in the country.

Kay Hamilton, the widow of the 15th Duke of Hamilton who died of vascular dementia earlier this year, is spearheaded the £1.5 million project by Alzheimer Scotland, BBC News reports.

Specialist dementia nurses could help to teach the staff how to handle situations in acute wards, as well as assessing patients and listening to the carers, she said.

Mrs Hamilton told the news provider: "We need early diagnosis of the patient with dementia, if we can.

"We need the services that are available to be linked up - people don't know how to apply for the benefits they could have."

The Craegmoor News reported recently that a golf club in Kidderminster has been raising money for the Alzheimer's Society and County Air Ambulance through raffles, coffee mornings and Christmas card sales.
