Dementia charity welcomes govt commitment to reform

A leading dementia care charity has welcomed the chancellor's confirmation that the government will shortly be setting out its long-term plans for social care reform.

The Alzheimer's Society said that the announcement showed the government was committed to improving a care system that was "broken" and had people paying a "dementia tax" of tens of thousands of pounds for sub-standard care.

Andrew Chidgey, the head of policy and public affairs at the Alzheimer's Society, said that the forthcoming white paper must be strong and clear, as the issue was too important to be reduced to sound bites.

"All political parties need to embrace this golden opportunity to come together and find a way to create a care service that guarantees high quality care at a fair price," said Mr Chidgey.

The Parkinson's Disease Society recently claimed that reform of social care could actually help the government save money in the long-term, through more efficient use of resources.
