Dementia campaigner nominated for two awards

A dementia campaigner from the north-east has been nominated for two top accolades.

Joe Grant from South Shields has been put forwards in the Role Model of the Year and Achieving Excellence categories at this year's Pride of South Tyneside Awards.

The 84-year, who has been working tirelessly to raise dementia awareness since his wife Blanche was diagnosed with the condition over a decade ago, was awarded the Carer of the Year award back in 2010.

Mr Grant looked after his wife until she sadly passed away in June 2012 but he has continued to work on dementia awareness projects in his local area.

He told The Shields Gazette: "My late wife has given me the reason to do it. I know things are improving slightly, but there is still abuse going on in certain areas and people [are] not getting the care they need."

The awards ceremony will be held at South Shields' Temple Park Centre on April 28th.
