Charity spends £35m on multiple sclerosis support

The MS Society spent £35 million supporting people with multiple sclerosis in 2009, according to the charity's latest accounts.

Of every £1 that is spent by the organisation 12 pence of it goes to funding scientific research projects that look to develop new treatments and search for a cure for multiple sclerosis.

Six pence is spent on lobbying policies and campaigns to raise awareness of the condition, while 30 pence is spent on improving care standards through respite care programmes and funding specialists.

In publishing the figures, the charity says that such sizeable spending on good causes is a real achievement in financially testing times.

"We have been careful not to start new programmes without funding in place, and we are reviewing our costs constantly so that we remain efficient," the MS Society statement read.

The Scotsman recently reported that the MS Society's decision to close four specialist care homes in the UK is to be challenged.
