Blood clot tool developed

A new tool has been developed to identify patients who are at a high risk of serious blood clots, which could be of use to those paying for assisted living.

The study, published on, revealed that the risk prediction tool, was able to detect the patients who might need preventative treatment.

It could be easily integrated into GP computer systems in order to assess patients' risk of blood clot before they are admitted to hospital.

Authors said: "We have developed and validated a new risk prediction model which identifies patients at high risk of venous thromboembolism. The algorithm is based on simple clinical variables which the patient is likely to know or which are routinely recorded in GP computer systems."

Venous thromboembolism is a blood clot that develops in a vein, with deep vein thrombosis being one of the most common forms.
