Wrap up warm this winter

The winter months often associated with snow are an exciting time in our Care Homes, however, cold weather is also linked to an increase in accidents and illness. For this reason, it is essential to know how to stay warm and the benefits of doing so during the coming winter months. By following our advice you will be prepared for the cold weather and enjoy the frost that is destined to arrive.

What are the health effects of the cold?

Everybody will feel the cold this winter, and you are no different. The cold weather has the potential to cause serious health problems if the correct precautions aren’t taken. The cold can be associated with various illnesses including common colds, heart attacks, strokes, pneumonia and the flu. All of these can be particularly impactful to older people and also avoided. In addition, free flu vaccinations are available for those who are over the age of 65, aiming to help you this winter.

Wear lots of layers

The cold weather is no reason not to embrace the outdoors and take part in various activities at Barchester, as it is possible to fight the freeze by simply wearing the correct clothing. A fool proof way to stay warm in winter is to wrap up in several thin layers comprised of cotton, wool and fleecy fibres that have been proven to help maintain body heat. Furthermore, this is the season to scour your wardrobe for your old winter staples that have been collecting dust for the past year, including scarves, hats and gloves.

Not only is it vitally important to layer up during winter but wearing the correct shoes is also of significant importance. By not having the correct footwear you become susceptible to falling over and inflicting serious injury on yourself. Accidents certainly do happen and by wearing shoes with the correct grip will reduce the risk.

Stay active and eat well

It is certainly no secret that exercise is good for your health, however as the temperature starts to drop, you might be tempted to as well.  Exercising regularly not only makes you feel good and builds your self esteem but it also boosts your body’s self defence system to fight against winter illnesses.

As the weather gets colder the temptation to overeat arises; this is the body’s primitive instinct in order to stockpile calories for the winter months. However, by keeping up regular exercise you will be able to manage your weight and keep your body in shape enabling you to eat the food you desire. Food is an essential source of energy that helps to keep the body warm. For this reason, it is important to have hot meals and hot drinks regularly during the day raising the body’s temperature.

Check the weather forecast

Possibly, the simplest and most effective way to prepare for the cold weather is to check the weather forecast. By knowing what the weather is going to be for the day to come it is possible to prevent the negative effects of the cold weather by preparing accordingly.

Remember if the weather is cold, wrap up warm and stay active in order to fight the wrath of winter.
