Eating more bananas and cutting down on salt can lower stroke chances

Eating less crisps and more bananas can help to lower your risk of having a stroke.

Research published by the British Medical Association (BMA) found that the fruit helps to lower blood pressure, making the chances of a stroke 24 per cent lower.

Previously, it had been thought the potassium in bananas could harm older people because their kidneys may struggle to remove it from their bloodstream.

However the authors of this study said those concerns can be dismissed.

The BMA also stated that reducing salt intake for four weeks or more also leads to a significant reduction in blood pressure levels.

Dr Clare Walton of the Stroke Association told the Daily Mail: "High blood pressure is the single biggest risk factor for stroke. Making changes to your diet can go a long way to keeping blood pressure under control."

Other than bananas, foods which are high in potassium include dates and spinach.
