Parkinson's Disease Society relaunches help fund

The Parkinson's Disease Society (PDS) has announced that it is to relaunch its Mali Jenkins Help Fund to provide one-off grants to people suffering from Parkinson's disease.

According to the charity, an updated application and approval process will make sure the fund improves the lives of those who need the money the most and will utilise a specialist panel to consider each case individually.

A person with Parkinson's disease, along with a representative from the PDS and an occupational therapist, will discuss each person's case, with up to £1,500 being allocated to such items as wheelchairs, bathroom equipment, voice amplifiers and scooters.

The charity concluded: "Up to £1,000 could also be granted for respite care for carers, and up to £500 could be allocated for non specialist equipment such as washing machines or tumble dryers, freezers or personal computers."

Earlier this month, the PDS attended the Movement Disorder Society's 13th International Congress of Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders to discuss the latest developments in the medical responses to the condition.
