Dementia perception 'changing slowly'

Linda Thake, who manages the Cemetery Lane centre, a resource providing care for those with dementia, makes her comments to the Derbyshire Evening Telegraph, as her staff plan a charity walk to raise money to help research and fight the disease.

Four of the team will be walking to raise money for the Alzheimer's Society.

"The perception of dementia is changing slowly but then it has to because we know that in the future, with an ageing population, more and more people are going to be affected," Ms Thake continues.

As the population grows older, more people will be making demands on dementia support organisations such as the Alzheimer's Society, she adds.

The Alzheimer's Society explains there are more than 100 types of dementia, including the more common Alzheimer's, vascular dementia and dementia with Lewy bodies.

It states there are a wide number of voluntary organisations which can supply advice and practical help, including local resources for those with dementia and their carers.
