The Stroke Association held its annual Life After Stroke Awards this week, highlighting the importance of carers in the prolonged health of stroke sufferers.

The Stroke Association held its annual Life After Stroke Awards this week, highlighting the importance of carers in the prolonged health of stroke sufferers.

Hosted at Claridge's Hotel on June 23rd, the 2009 Awards were hosted by DJ Neil 'Doctor' Fox and aimed to highlight just how "huge and overwhelming" the impact of stroke could be and how people were able to overcome this.

It explained that each year, it sees many people with "immense courage and determination" in overcoming the effects of such a condition, relearning old skills and other traits to regain the freedom they once had.

The charity continued: "It is for this reason that the Stroke Association organises the Life After Stroke Awards - an opportunity to formally recognise and celebrate the achievements of these remarkable people."

According to the Stroke Association, around 150,000 people in the UK suffer a stroke each year, with one-third of people likely to die within ten days of the first attack.
