National newspaper: Barchester home provides revolutionary care

Care home hailed for its positive environment and high-quality care.

A Barchester care home has received lavish praise in a national newspaper for bringing about a "revolution" in care.

Threshfield Court in Yorkshire provides "uplifting treatment" which is having a "profound effect on residents", states Julie McCaffrey, writing for the Daily Mirror.

The care home offers a wide variety of stimulating old objects - such as a 1950s Singer sewing machine, vintage Bovril adverts on the walls and an old-fashioned Silver Cross pram - which are designed both to comfort residents and unlock long-term memories.

Valerie Gains, the care home's general manager, told the newspaper: "We have trained nurses on duty 24 hours a day, but the difference with our team members and other care home staff is all in the attitude and the heart."

Ms Gains pointed out that staff at Threshfield Court enjoy activities like singing or dancing with residents and are focused on making it a happy and enjoyable environment in which to live.

Thresfield Court Care Centre, a former country house hotel, is set in impressive landscaped gardens in the Yorkshire Dales, near Skipton.

A personalised care plan is devised for each resident and specialist staff provide a range of activities as well as high levels of cooking and hospitality at the care home.
