Caring for Alzheimer's patients is a family affair

A new report suggests that many children help their parents care for elderly relatives with Alzheimer's.

A new survey has shown the magnitude of caring for a parent with Alzheimer's means that many care givers have to enlist the help of their own offspring.

Research conducted by the Alzheimer's Foundation in the US suggests that three in five caregivers give children aged under 21 tasks related to the care of their elderly grandparents.

These included attending doctors' appointments and helping to feed and dress them.

Of the caregivers who feel they do a good job balancing the care of their loved ones with Alzheimer's disease have children under 21, 36 per cent cited support from their children as a contributor to their success.

This follows news that the Alzheimer's Society in the UK has published a new guide on person centred care.
