A new collaboration between the food industry and research organisations has been announced.
A new £4 million public-private partnership has been launched which will investigate the links between diet and health.
The Diet and Health Research Industry Club (DRINC), which is managed and led by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), includes two other research organisations and 15 food and drink companies.
It aims to develop the scientific understanding of key issues linking diet and health so that food companies can address obesity, heart disease and other health problems, to the benefit of the consumer.
BBSRC director of corporate science Dr Doug Yarrow said: "This work will ensure that the food industry can access the best of UK science to address some of the most important health issues faced by the UK today."
Dr Alistair Penman, chair of the DRINC awarding panel and independent consultant, added that the project could have a real impact on the diet and health of the UK population.
