East Riding of Yorkshire
Called ‘God’s own County’ by its inhabitants, and renowned as ‘Garden of England’ by others, Yorkshire is not only one of the greenest counties in England but, as a whole, the country’s largest. In fact, Yorkshire is actually subdivided into four areas – north, west, south and East of Riding. The latter covers 930 square miles and has a population of more than 335,000, with the majority living in Hull. Known for its agriculture and tourism, the county’s rural landscape boasts not only the hills of the Yorkshire Wolds but also a beautifully rugged coastline. This has inspired great literature from the Bronte sisters and Bram Stoker in the past, and today leads the way with energy generation from renewable sources with a large number of wind farms.
