Huckleberry House

Your home, your choices and support

Huckleberry House offers care and support in a variety of ways to children and young people aged between 8 – 17 years of age. The majority of children have a learning disability; including children with an autistic spectrum disorder. Many children display behaviours associated with their condition and staff are experienced in dealing with these in an empathic and supportive manner.

In addition to children with a learning disability we can also accommodate one child with a physical disability, in a fully adapted, downstairs bedroom.

We provide short breaks that are flexible and planned specifically to meet the needs of the young person and their family. Stays can vary in length and include day care during the holidays to facilitate leisure activities; regular overnight stays each week to provide the consistency of routine; we also offer full time care.

The home is small and well located within a residential area of Hessle. It serves both Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire. We aim to provide a comfortable and relaxed environment where children can unwind with familiar staff, familiar routines and within a familiar environment. We find that this helps children to settle quickly and to alleviate any unnecessary anxieties.

Each child has a care plan that meets their individual needs and which is formulated involving the people that know the child best; parents, extended family, their teacher and the child’s social worker.

At Huckleberry House we place a lot of emphasis on providing opportunities for the children and young people which, without support, they may not be able to access. We offer a wide range of activities to expand their experiences, utilising community facilities wherever possible and regularly visit parks, libraries and museums, undertake leisure activities such as swimming, rock climbing, cycling using adapted bikes, ten pin bowling and theatre trips.

A recent Ofsted inspection commented: “A real strength is the commitment to ensuring positive experiences and opportunities through activities and social gatherings for young people during their stay”. (Ofsted, 28.04.2010).
