West Midlands
From Cotswolds countryside to ancient cathedrals, it’s impossible not to be inspired by the West Midlands, also known as the ‘Heart of England’. Stratford upon Avon in Warwickshire - part of the West Midlands alongside Birmingham, Coventry, Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire and Worcestershire - has perhaps inspired more people globally than anywhere else in the world. As the birthplace of William Shakespeare, it was here he wrote no less than 37 of his plays and 154 sonnets. But that’s just the beginning when it comes to this region. Its five Areas of Outstanding Beauty – including the Shropshire Hills, Cannock Chase and the Wye Valley – have inspired literary greats such as Tolkien and George Eliot in the past, and films such as Harry Potter in recent years. Meanwhile it’s also the birthplace of some of Britain’s favourite things – including Bulmers Cider, which hails from Hereford, Cadbury milk chocolate, which is based near Marlbrook, and Royal Worcestershire porcelain, with a heritage dating back to the 1700s.
