Warwickshire

Famous for being the birthplace of William Shakespeare, tourists flock to Warwickshire’s pretty towns, villages and countryside – most notably to the theatres of Stratford-upon-Avon, many of which are dedicated to staging the Bard’s plays.  Another quintessentially English product of the county is rumoured to be rugby. As the story goes, in 1823, a student of the famous Rugby school decided to pick up a football and run with it.  A new sport was born.  Warwickshire has no cities.  Its largest towns are Nuneaton, birthplace of George Elliot, and Warwick, with its imposing castle.  Much of western Warwickshire was once covered by the ancient Forest of Arden.  While most of the forest no longer stands, many Warwickshire villages, such as Henley-in-Arden, are still named after it.
