Staffordshire
Landlocked Staffs in the West Midlands has an extensive network of waterways, with more miles of canal than any other shire county. Its largest city is Stoke-on-Trent, best known for its pottery and china, with Wedgwood, Royal Doulton and Spode all originating in the area and still produced there today. Nearby Burton-on-Trent is home of the brewing industry, with the Coors Visitor Centre tracing the story of beer through the stories of the people who worked there. There are also many castles and stately homes in the area too, including the complete working Shugborough historic estate; Tamworth Castle, the most complete ruin of the area (including dungeons); and Tutbury Castle with it’s ‘ghost hunts’. The area’s scenery includes the Staffordshire Moorlands and the Peak District. Cannock Chase, between Stafford and Birmingham, also has Britain’s largest herd of fallow deer, a sculpture trail, and plenty of mountain biking trails.
