Shropshire

Bordering Wales to the west, Shropshire is one of England’s most rural counties, with the country’s largest number of castles and manor houses of all in England.  Its six main towns include Shrewsbury, a vibrant market town with around 600 listed buildings and an Abbey, as well as Telford, Oswestry, Newport, Bridgnorth and Ludlow.  Ludlow was once described by the poet John Betjeman as “the loveliest town in England”. Today, it is known for fine dining, with seven Michelin starred restaurants in and around the area.  The River Severn, Britain’s longest river, meanders through the county. It is straddled at Telford by Ironbridge Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a celebrated symbol of the Industrial Revolution.  Meanwhile, the Severn Valley steam Railway chugs into Bridgnorth most Sundays throughout the year.  In contrast, the Shropshire Hills are a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that cover about a quarter of the county.
