Wales

Having conquered the Celts, Romans, Saxons and Vikings over thousands of years – it’s no surprise that the Welsh are both fiercely proud and protective of their country today.  Visit this enigmatic part of the UK, with its three million people and land that stretches over 8,000 square miles, and encounter ancient castles and fortresses alongside modern records of the industrial revolution and countless coalmines.  The Welsh language will also be audible, given it’s spoken by at least 20 per cent of the nation.  Known variously as ‘the land of song’ and ‘the land of magic and enchantment’ due to it being the birthplace of the wizard Merlin (according to Arthurian legend), it is indeed a mystical place.  Never far from a mountain or a sea, it’s home to one of the highest peaks in the UK, Snowdon, and also 1,200km of coastline.  Little wonder it’s endlessly enticing to as many walkers and cyclists as it is surfers and sailors.
