Neath Port Talbot
With the greatest number of waterfalls of any area of Wales, the Vale of Neath is renowned as the 'Waterfall Country'. These flow around the deep gorges of the rivers Mellte, Hepste and Nedd Fechan, and between the villages of Pontneddfechan and Ystradfellte. In fact, the Aberdulais Falls on the River Dulais is the subject of Turner’s painting The Watermill. Overall, Neath Port Talbot is mostly rural upland, with 45 per cent covered by forest. Meanwhile, Afan Forest Park has become a mecca for cyclists, Margam Country Park houses three notable buildings (Margam Abbey, Margam Castle and the 18th century Orangery), and Gnoll Country Park boasts lakes, waterfalls and the ruins of Gnoll Mansion. The region stretches from the coast, which is characterized by sand dunes, to the borders of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Aberavon Beach is also a large blue flag beach resort, popular with kite boarders and surfers.
