Wiltshire

Perhaps this county’s most famous sites are the ancient stone circles in Avebury and Stonehenge.  These impressive monuments date from around 2500BC and are a major tourist attraction.  Other places of interest include the stately homes of Wilton House near Salisbury and the National Trust house and gardens of Stourhead in Warminster.  Then there’s Longleat, with its magnificent safari park – the first drive-through safari outside of Africa, complete with lions, zebra, rhino and other large animals.  Salisbury, with its imposing cathedral, is the only city in Wiltshire. Its origins are Roman, with many preserved and protected 17th century buildings.  The local countryside, meanwhile, is the main training UK area of the British Army, while almost half the county is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, including the Salisbury Plain, the Cotswolds, and Cranborne Chase and the West Wiltshire Downs.
