Somerset

Rolling countryside characterises Somerset, from the Blackdown Hills to Mendip and Quantock.  Add in Exmoor National Park and the flat expanse of the Somerset Levels, and a suitably green picture is conjured up.  To fully appreciate the region’s diversity, however, add the gentle rivers of Axe, Brue, Cary, Parrett, Sheppey, Tone and Yeo; 40 miles of coastline; and the region’s caves, including Wookey Hole and Cheddar Gorge.  In addition, Somerset has two cities – Bath and Wells – both of which date back to Roman times.  The main industry of the region is agriculture, although it’s also the birthplace of Cheddar cheese and a principle producer of cider.  The region’s main claim to fame, however, is Glastonbury Festival, which attracts over 170,000 music fans.  It has grown from humble beginnings in 1970, and has played host to major international acts including U2, Beyoncé and Coldplay.
