Gloucestershire

A historic county in southwest England, Gloucestershire dates back to Anglo-Saxon times and beyond.  Comprising part of the Cotswold Hills, part of the flat fertile valley of the River Severn, and the entire Forest of Dean, this area is as interesting as it is cosmopolitan.  Take the town of Cheltenham, also known as Cheltenham Spa since the 1700s, given it is built on natural springs.  Hosting a variety of internationally renowned festivals each year – including literature, jazz, science and music – it’s hardly surprising it was voted the best place to live in Britain in 2006.  Meanwhile, just a short drive away is Gloucester Cathedral, which dates back to 681.  A stunning architecture feat, it is the burial place of King Edward II, but is perhaps even more famous amongst young people today for being the location of many scenes in the Harry Potter films.
