West Sussex

This pretty region on the south coast of England is known for its historic buildings – notably Arundel and Bramber Castles and Fishbourne Roman Palace – and for its beautiful scenery, including the wooded plain of The Weald, the ancient yew forest of Kingley Vale, and the South Downs National Park.  The iron-age hill fort of Cissbury Ring, which dates back to 330AD, is set within the South Downs, offering views over the teetering cliffs of Beachy Head.  Over half of the county is protected countryside, which makes it ideal for walking and cycling.  Many West Sussex towns, such as Chichester, Petworth, Bosham and Horsham, are steeped in history, with well-preserved ancient buildings.  Among the county’s coastal towns, Chichester Harbour is known for yachting, and the iconic Butlin’s holiday resort, complete with ‘Red Coats’, can be found at Bognor Regis.
