Surrey

Literature, film and poetry flow from creative Surrey.  Much of H G Wells’s futuristic work, The War of the Worlds, is set in this county, as is Jane Austen’s Emma and many of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes mysteries.  Parts of the 2004 romantic comedy Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason was filmed in Surrey’s Shere village.  The poet John Donne lived and wrote in Pyrford, Lord Alfred Tennyson spent his last years in Haslemere, and Charles Dickens wrote part of The Pickwick Papers in Dorking.  Additionally, the birth of cricket can be traced to this most English of counties, and the Surrey County Cricket Club, formed in 1685, is still going strong.  More famous Surrey sports grounds include the Epsom Downs Racecourse and Brooklands, the world’s first purpose-built motorsport racing circuit.  Of course, this home county is also known for its beautiful scenery – including the Surrey Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – and its picturesque villages.
