Scotland
Occupying the northern third of Great Britain, Scotland is part of the United Kingdom and a country in its own right. Comprising over 30,000 square miles of mainland and 790 islands, of which 150 are inhabited (including the Northern Isles and the Hebrides), it is a place rich with history and thriving today. Along with artefacts and monuments dating back thousands of years, two of its most famous inhabitants are still very much celebrated today. These are Robert the Bruce, the country’s most successful monarch who reigned in the 1300s, and Robert Burns, Scotland’s national poet who lived in the 1700s, and whose birthday is commemorated nationwide each year with ‘Burns Night’ on the 25th January. Today, Scotland is as famous for its commercial, intellectual and industrial power as it is its history. This is down to a strong financial services sector in Edinburgh, electronics manufacturing in Glasgow and a thriving oil industry in Aberdeen, along with unlimited natural beauty and tourist opportunities year-round.
