Highlands
A magical region of immense, mountainous beauty, the Scottish Highlands, which can be found in the furthest north part of the country, are simply breath taking. Now one of the most sparsely populated places in Europe, with just 200,000 people stretching across its 30,414 square miles, this wasn’t always the case. Until the Jacobite Rising of 1745, also known as the ‘Highland Clearances’ which resulted in mass migration to urban areas during the Industrial Revolution, many more people lived there. Today, however, it is an unspoilt environment to behold. With its abundance of fertile land, clear water and fresh air, it is haven for nature and wildlife, and home to everything from ospreys to seals to the odd Loch Ness monster. There are also the golf courses there which range from the quaint to championship quality. And then distilleries that make some of Scotland’s finest whiskies. It’s simply a captivating part of the country.
