Known as ‘The Queen of the South’, the Scottish city of Dumfries is home to 31,000 of county Dumfries & Galloway 148,000 population. It was also home to two of Scotland’s most famous descendants – Robert the Bruce, the country’s most successful monarch who reigned in the 1300s, and poet Robert Burns, Scotland’s favourite son, who lived there in the 1700s, and whose works is still celebrated today. Thousands descend on the county each year to walk the Robert the Bruce Trail or visit the home Robert Burns’ home on Burns Street. But many more come to see its 200 miles of coastline, 2,500 miles of the scenic roads, and to board the Belfast-bound ferries. But you don’t need a boat to catch a glimpse of nearby islands. On a clear day, Ireland, the Isle of Man and Cumbria are all visible from the coast.
