Merseyside

Comprising five metropolitan boroughs, Merseyside encompasses Knowsley, St Helens, Sefton, Wirral and the city of Liverpool.  While Knowsley and St Helens are landlocked, the other districts flank the River Mersey and the Irish Sea where land use is mainly urban.  The area is also known for its maritime history and an expanding reputation for fine food and drink. Liverpool has a number of top bars and hotels, while Wirral has Michelin-starred restaurant, Fraiche, in Birkenhead.  Liverpool itself is known for its triumphant football teams and, of course, as the birthplace of The Beatles.  The city is also proud of its two majestic Cathedrals, thriving shopping district, and engaging cultural scene, offering more museums and galleries than anywhere in the UK outside of London.  Today, Liverpool is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to the architecture along its waterfront.
