Lancashire

Thrill-seekers may head for Blackpool, Britain's most popular seaside resort, but Lancashire has plenty for everyone.  Nature-lovers can enjoy the West Pennine Moors and the Forest of Bowland.  The latter is a 300 square mile Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the northeast of the county with Ribble Way, a 73-mile footpath following the Ribble Valley.  Meanwhile, those with an interest in history can find ancient Roman ruins, medieval monasteries and Bronze Age burial sites in Lancashire.  The county’s urban areas have a great deal to offer too.  The university cities of Lancaster and Preston are a draw for shoppers, and boast many great bars and restaurants. In contrast, coastal villages – such as Silverdale by the Morecambe Bay and St Annes-on-Sea near Blackpool – are quiet and picturesque.  Inland are hundreds of mill towns that were, in the 1830s, central to the county’s industry.
